Vietnamese tycoon Truong My Lan has been condemned to death for Bank fraud $44 billion.
“Vietnamese tycoon Truong My Lan’s dramatic trial amid allegations of massive bank fraud, the culmination of an anti-corruption campaign led by Communist Party Secretary-General Nguyen Phu Trong.”Vietnamese businessman Truong My Lan was given a death sentence for defrauding $44 billion.
In the heart of Ho Chi Minh City, beneath the grand yellow portico of a courthouse steeped in colonial history, a remarkable trial unfolded. A 67-year-old Vietnamese property developer stood trial for orchestrating one of the most colossal bank frauds in the nation’s history.
She joined the ranks of the few Vietnamese women who received a death sentence for a white-collar crime due to the shockingly unusual conviction. This ruling underscored the seriousness of the deception. Allegations suggested that Truong My Lan masterminded an extraordinary $44 billion credit program from the Saigon Commercial Bank. Although the jury instructed her to relinquish $27 billion, the prosecution feared that a significant portion of the funds might never be recovered. Some speculated that the death penalty’s severity was a last-ditch effort by the court to compel her to return at least some of the missing billions.
In a departure from their usual reticence, the communist authorities provided detailed insights into the case. They revealed the involvement of nearly 200 attorneys, 10 state prosecutors, and 2,700 witnesses. The trial’s magnitude was unparalleled, with a total weight of six tonnes and consisting of 104 boxes of evidence.
“This trial stands out from any other in the communist era,” remarked former US State Department official David Brown, who had experience in Vietnam. “It’s a spectacle on an unprecedented scale.”
